Mauricio Pochettino says Kylian Mbappe is 'calm' despite contract uncertainty

Mauricio Pochettino has said Kylian Mbappe seems “calm” despite the uncertainty surrounding his Paris Saint-Germain contract.

Mbappe’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season with the forward being strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid. Real came in with two bids for Mbappe in the summer, but he ended up staying in Paris – much to the player’s dismay.

Despite this, Pochettino has insisted that Mbappe’s focus has not been affected this season.

“I think the club was strong. The idea was for him to stay with us and Mbappe seems calm,” Pochettino told ‘Universo Valdano’ (via Marca).

“He’s a great professional and he has respected his contractual situation. He’s an intelligent lad, young but mature. As a footballer he’s extraordinary. A world champion. He’s the present and the future.”

Mbappe’s future has been the subject of much discussion over the past week. Both Carlo Ancelotti and Karim Benzema hinted that they expect to see him join Real, which led to PSG sporting director Leonardo criticising Los Blancos for a lack of respect.

Mbappe himself commented on the saga, confirming that he did ask to join the La Liga giants in the summers as well as revealing that he felt disappointed that the club did not let him depart.

All of this seemed to suggest that he would be leaving PSG. However, Mbappe’s mother has since said that contract talks are progressing well with the Ligue 1 side, meaning he could end up staying after all.

The 22-year-old currently makes up one third of the most illustrious front three in world football, alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar. Despite the players’ high profile, there is a feeling that the best is yet to come from the trio – even though PSG have lost just once in all competitions this season.
