Diogo Jota sent home from international duty following injury

Diogo Jota is in danger of missing Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Watford on Saturday after picking up an injury on international duty with Portugal and being sent home.

The forward has not been training with the rest of his international teammates in recent days and missed a 3-0 win over Qatar at the weekend through injury.

Now, Jota has been sent back to England as he was deemed not fit enough to play against Luxembourg on Tuesday night.

“He trained a while ago, increased the intensity today with Joao Brito, but he didn’t train with us,” Portugal head coach Fernando Santos said in his pre-match press conference.

“The probability will be little. I’ll talk to him, see how he feels. If we see that he has any conditions to be on the bench and then come in, that’s fine.

“If we don’t, we won’t take the risk with a player who hasn’t been able to train with us for a long time. ‘I’ll make the decision shortly, and if he can’t play, he’ll head to Liverpool.”

Jota’s absence is a big blow for Portugal ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifier. They are currently sat second in their group, one point behind Serbia but with a game in hand.

Jota has become a key part of Liverpool’s attack this season after an injury-plagued 2020/21 campaign. He’s made six Premier League starts so far this year, and has three goals to his name.

The 24-year-old has displaced Roberto Firmino in the middle of Liverpool’s frontline. The Reds currently sit second in the Premier League table, one point behind leaders Chelsea, and are among the last remaining undefeated teams in Europe this season.

He now faces a race against time to be fit ahead of the Reds’ meeting with the Hornets this weekend.
