Neymar reacts to latest injury setback after leaving Saint-Etienne on crutches

Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar has vowed to ‘come back better and stronger’ after painfully rolling his ankle in Sunday’s Ligue 1 win over Saint-Etienne.

The Brazilian was seen exiting the stadium via the media mixed zone with the aid of crutches and posted an update about his condition on Instagram.

Neymar posted an image of the exact moment his ankle was fully turned under the weight of his body, alongside his face screaming in pain on the cold turf of Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

“Let’s recover,” the 29-year-old said. “Unfortunately, these setbacks are part of an athlete’s life. Now that’s what you have, lift your head and let’s go. I’ll come back better and stronger.”

PSG were winning 2-1 at the time Neymar was forced to depart after Lionel Messi set up goals for Marquinhos and Angel Di Maria. Messi later completed a hat-trick of assists as Marquinhos got his second of the night to seal the 3-1 victory and preserve PSG’s 12-point lead atop the standings.

Neymar has already missed games at the start of this season because he was lacking fitness and needed rest after the Copa America in summer. His PSG career has largely been limited by injuries ever since a €222m transfer from Barcelona in 2017.

He was limited to only 18 Ligue 1 appearances last season because of ankle and thigh problems, while he had suffered injury trouble in 2019/20 before the campaign was abandoned amid the coronavirus pandemic, and played 20 or fewer league games in both 2017/18 and 2018/19.
